The ABC 2015-16 schedule can be summed up with one word: “variety.” And a lot of it. In announcing its schedule Tuesday, the network confirmed it ordered 10 new shows while renewing 23 series.
“The shows we have really fit into our brand of smart, emotional, inclusive storytelling,” ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Rice told reporters Tuesday morning. “An important thing for us when you’re creating shows in a world of total choice is buzzworthy shows from really passionate storytellers with strong, authentic voices.”
Among those far-reaching stories are the Biblical drama “Of Kings and Prophets,” the FBI conspiracy thriller “Quantico,” the soap “Oil” and a relaunch of “The Muppets” as a docu-comedy along the lines of “The Office.”
Rice said the network will continue its strategy to mix up episode orders for shows, using limited series such as “Agent Carter” and Galavant” as what he called “gap shows” to split the season of other series without having to rely on repeats.

News series “Wicked City” will be a gap show for “Quantico,” which has a full-season order of 22 episodes. The full season of “Nashville” will be split by the return of “Secrets & Lies.” “Agent Carter” likely will split “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” again. “Of Kings and Prophets” will debut in the fall uninterrupted, then new political drama “The Family” will debut after the Oscar broadcast in February, Rice said.
“We felt the old model of original, original, repeat, original, repeat, repeat, original just didn’t reflect the way we were all watching television. We love to watch a [full] run, particularly on serialized shows,” Rice said.
ABC has plenty of serialized dramas, both new and returning. Read more about the new shows and watch their trailers below.
