Shadowhunters returns for its second season premiere Jan. 2 on Freeform, followed by the series premiere—and full-season streaming—of the new drama Beyond.
Freeform announced the unusual rollout of “Beyond” during New York Comic Con. The series will have its on-air, two-hour premiere at 9/8c Jan. 2 on Freeform. The entire season will be available for bingeing on multiple digital platforms, including the Freeform app, Freeform.com, On Demand and Hulu.
“The premiere of ‘Beyond’ marks an important milestone in the history of Freeform, nearly a year since our rebrand,” Freeform president Tom Ascheim said in a release. “We are modernizing how we bring our shows to our audience. ‘Beyond’ is our first, and definitely not our last, ‘binge-from-the-start’ show.”
“Beyond” tells the story of Holden Matthews (Burkely Duffield), a young man who wakes up from a 12-year coma to learn he has unusual abilities. Those new powers propel him into the middle of a dangerous conspiracy. Throughout the season, Holden will figure out how to survive in a changed world. More importantly, he must learn what happened to him during those 12 years and why it happened.
The series also stars Dilan Gwyn as Willa, a young woman who may have answers for Holden. “Glee” veteran Romy Rosemont plays as Holden’s mom, Diane Matthews, and Michael McGrady plays his dad, Tom Matthews. Jonathan Whitesell stars as Luke Matthews. Jeff Pierre plays Jeff McArdle.
Freeform also shared some “Shadowhunters” news at New York Comic Con. “The Vampire Dairies” actor Paul Wesley will direct a Season 2 episode of the supernatural series. Again, the second season premieres at 8/7c Jan. 2.
In the premiere, the Shadow World is in upheaval as Valentine and The Circle continue to grow stronger. The Shadowhunter team becomes disillusioned with The Clave and its members’ reaction to recent events.
“Loyalties will be tested, unlikely bonds will be made and relationships will be pushed to the limit as the Shadowhunters and their Downworlder friends make their way in a new world,” Freeform says.
Katherine McNamara stars as Clary Fray, who had no idea she is a Shadowhunter. Dominic Sherwood plays Jace Wayland, a Shadowhunter who has helped Clary find her way in the Shadow World. Alberto Rosende plays Clary’s best friend, Simon Lewis.
Emeraude Toubia stars as Isabelle Lightwood and Matthew Daddario plays her brother, Alec Lightwood. They are both Shadowhunters,
Isaiah Mustafa plays Luke Garroway, an NYPD detective and werewolf who looks out for Clary. Harry Shum Jr. plays Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn who has a relationship with Alec.
Todd Slavkin, Darren Swimmer, McG and Matt Hastings executive produce “Shadowhunters,” which is produced by Constantin Film.
Adam Nussdorf created, writes and executive produces “Beyond,” which comes from Imperative Entertainment and Automatik. Tim Kring, David Eick, Steven Adelson, Zak Kadison, Justin Levy and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones serve as executive producers.
