The Gifted will return for a second season, Fox Television Group Chairman and CEO Gary Newman announced Thursday at the Television Critics Association winter tour in Pasadena. The network also announced a special episode of Family Guy and the final season premiere date for New Girl.
The family adventure series, “The Gifted,” set in Marvel’s “X-Men” universe debuted in Fall 2017 and will have its first season finale at 9/8c Jan. 15.
In the two-hour season finale, titled “eXtraction/X-roads,” Dr. Campbell (Garret Dillahunt) attends the Humanity Today summit, attempting to take the Hound program national, while some of the team at Mutant HQ go on a dangerous mission to stop his efforts. Then, the Mutant HQ comes under attack. With everything to lose, alliances shift and relationships are put to the test.

Ranking as the No. 3 new drama of the 2017-2018 season, the show averages 8.3 million total viewers across platforms. Matt Nix, Bryan Singer, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory serve as executive producers. Nix, who serves as the series’ showrunner, wrote the pilot, which was directed by Singer.

Family Guy plans almost ad-free episode
The Emmy Award-winning animated series Family Guy will air an extended-length episode with limited commercial interruption March 11 on Fox, the network announced Thursday in Pasadena.
In the “Send in Stewie, Please” episode, Stewie (Seth MacFarlane) gets sent to the office of his school’s child psychologist, Dr. Cecil Pritchfield (guest voice Sir Ian McKellen), after pushing one of his classmates. During the session, Stewie experiences a series of personal and emotional revelations about himself that fans will not want to miss.
“I think Sir Ian learned a lot from working with me,” noted the youngest Griffin. “And mark my words: he has a bright future in this business.”
The series’ landmark 300th episode, “Dog Bites Bear,” airs at 9/8c Jan. 14. In the episode, Brian and Stewie get into a friendship-ending fight, while Peter finally meets his idol.
New Girl sets final season premiere
The seventh and final season of “New Girl will premiere at 9:30/8:30c April 10 on Fox. The eight-episode final season will have a special one-hour finale at 9/8c May 15.
The series, which debuted in 2011, stars Zooey Deschanel as Jess Day; Jake Johnson as Nick Miller; Max Greenfield as Schmidt; Lamorne Morris as Winston Bishop, and Hannah Simone as Cece Schmidt.
As the series’ sixth season came to a close, Jess told Nick of her true feelings for him. Also, Winston and Aly (guest star Nasim Pedrad) got engaged, and Cece and Schmidt received news that they are expecting.
When the series returns for its final season, we pick of the story three years later. Jess and Nick are happily together and returning from a whirlwind European book tour; stay-at-home dad Schmidt and working mom Cece are raising their daughter, Ruth; and Winston and Aly are married, with a child on the way.
In addition to Pedrad, the final season will feature the return of many of the series’ notable guest stars, including Damon Wayans, Jr., Dermot Mulroney, David Walton, Nelson Franklin, Sam Richardson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Rob Reiner. JB Smoove and Tig Notaro also will make their series debuts in guest-starring roles.
