SAG Awards nominees were announced Wednesday, with Rami Malek of “Mr. Robot” making a first time appearance, while Taraji P. Henson and “Empire” were shut out.
Anna Faris and Anthony Mackie made the announcement at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles during a ceremony broadcast by TNT, TBS and TruTV.
This is the first of the major awards to weigh in on this season, and there were some odd choices. I’ll let you figure those out. But let me add, with so much good TV airing these days, there will be snubs galore and no one should feel disheartened. No one can watch all the TV that’s out there, and it might take a season or two for voters to not just tick boxes for the oft-nominated and vote a new show or star to a nomination.
I’m not saying that’s the way it should be, but it is. So prepare yourself: Your show or actor may not be listed.
Having said that, it’s interesting that newcomer Malek scored a nomination for “Mr. Robot.” Also surprising are a few shoo-ins that didn’t make it. Fox’s hit “Empire” and its Emmy-nominated star Henson seemed like locks. Surprisingly, “Inside Amy Schumer” and its star and creator also were snubbed.
The 22nd annual ceremony will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. Jan. 30 on TNT and TBS. For a list of the movie award nominees visit the SAG site.
