The upcoming fourth season of Star Wars Rebels ends the series, creator Dave Filoni announced Saturday after presenting a trailer for the season.
During an April 15 panel at the Star Wars Celebration Orlando, Filoni said the animated series will be a complete journey as the creators intended. He was referring to his previous effort, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” which ended prematurely without wrapping of the story.
“We all felt that the time was right and that the characters were at a point where their story, and their destinies, should finally be revealed,” he said of “Rebels.” “We deeply appreciate all our fans who have journeyed with the Ghost crew, and I promise season four will be like no other.”
The show’s main cast members—Freddie Prinze, Jr. (Kanan), Tiya Sircar (Sabine), Taylor Gray (Ezra), Vanessa Marshall (Hera), and Steve Blum (Zeb)—were part of the panel with Filoni.
Now in production, the 15-episode season of “Star Wars Rebels” will premiere this fall on Disney XD.
Season 4 pushes its characters closer to their destinies, and draws the “Star Wars” story closer to the events of “Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope,” the original 1977 film that spawned 40 years of movies, books, series and more.
Filoni confirmed previous guest characters like Mon Mothma and Saw Gerrera will return. Warwick Davis, he added, will voice Grand Admiral Thrawn’s Noghri bodyguard, Rukh.
The executive producer also suggested the final season will be a bit darker. Could this be the end for some of the Ghost crew? They would have been part of the Alliance during the 1977 film, unless they didn’t survive.
“We never imagined it would end like this,” Hera says in the trailer.
