A new scene from Orange Is The New Black Season 5 teases a gunshot—but did the shooter hit anyone?
Netflix on Tuesday released the minute-long clip that shows opens the new season, which picks up right where Season 4 left off. Reeling from the death of Poussey (Samira Wiley) at the hands of the tough new guards, the inmates of Litchfield rioted.
The season ended in a cliffhanger with Daya (Dascha Polanco) aiming a weapon at sadistic corrections officer Thomas Humphrey (Michael Torpey).
The Season 5 footage shows Daya comtemplating her next move as other inmates shout for her to shoot the guard.
The tense situation is lightened—at least for viewers—when the camera cuts to Piper (Taylor Schilling) and Alex (Laura Prepon) discussing what is happening.
“Is this a real riot? This is a real riot,” Piper says. “If this is real riot, do you think this is a step forward or backwards for equality?”
“Are you kidding me?” Alex says, grabbing Piper to leave the area. “C’mon!”
While that might be a topic of discussion, I’m with Alex: This is not the right time to ponder it. Creator Jenji Kohan and her writers continue to bring up issues in both dramatic and comedic ways. Often, they do both at the same time.
The clip fades to black and bam, someone fires weapon. Was it Daya? Did she shoot Humphrey or fire into the air to get some quiet? Or did an officer shoot her?
“Orange Is The New Black” returns June 9 to Netflix with an unusual season. The entire season takes place in real time and over the course of just three days as the inmates of Litchfield continue their revolt against unfair treatment.
Whatever Daya does, she and the other residents of Litchfield—as well as the corrections officers—will be changed forever.
Netlfix also released several images from the first three episodes of the new season, which you can see below.
“Orange is the New Black” is based on the best-selling memoir by Piper Kerman.
