‘Outlander’ finale: Three’s a crowd

Claire and Jamie have endured so much in the first season of Starz’s “Outlander,” but their biggest challenge lies ahead in the form of—no surprise here—Black Jack Randall.

Three is definitely a crowd in the disturbing Season 1 finale airing at 8 p.m. May 30. Titled “To Ransom a Man’s Soul,” the finale finds Claire (Caitriona Balfe) stepping into the darkness to boot Black Jack (Tobias Menzies) out of the psyche of her beloved, Jamie (Sam Heughan).

In the preview clip above, Jamie remains in the clutches of his not-gay-just-psycho tormentor, who seems to be incapable of keeping his face away from our hero’s. And they’re both shirtless. So you figure that out. It isn’t pretty.

As we saw in the previous episode, Claire has been planning a rescue with Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix), Angus (Stephen Walters), Rupert (Grant O’Rourke) and Willie (Finn Den Hertog). It looks like they enlist the aid of the monks at a monastery as well.

They might not all be bullish on the mission, but the plan will trample Black Jack’s and the redcoats’ belief that they are completely safe inside the walls of Wentworth Prison.

Will Jamie be the same man? Black Jack’s sadistic torture of him has been difficult to watch, and Menzies has teased that there is more brutality to come.

Still, as I said in this post, “5 reasons Claire & Jamie are TV’s most romantic couple,” Jamie and Claire have so much love for each other they should be able to sail past anything Black Jack can throw their way.
